Composites

  1. Two or more materials combined to create a material with enhanced properties

  2. Fibre reinforced composites

    • Eg: Carbon reinforced plastic, glass reinforced plastic, concretes mixed with fibre, kevlar
    • Good strength to weight ratio, resistant to corrosion, good fatigue resistance, flame resistance
    • Releasing agent, apply gel coat, leave, apply polyester resin and grp, leave
    • Body protection, sports equipment, sails, gloves, car body parts, suspension
  3. Particle-based composites

    • Eg: Tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, concretes
      • Tungsten carbide is a mixture of tungsten and cobalt. Used for sharp cutting tools
        • Manufactured by sintering
        • Tough, shock resistant and resistant to high temps
    • Concrete can be reinforced with tensioned rods to allow longer beams and to stop cracking
      • Can be cast on site, components are readily available, high strength in compression
  4. Sheet-based composites

    • Eg: Plywood, chipboard, MDF, hardboard, metal sheets layered with polymer sheets
      • Chipboard floor boards; cheaper and large areas can be covered at once, needs to be covered
    • ALU composite; aluminium sheet and polyethylene core
      • Lightweight, impact resistance and good rigidity
