1. Everything is made from an atom and there are over 100 different types. These are called elements and are divided by metals and non-metals.

2. ATOMS= atoms are very small , you cant even see them with a microscope! Its the smallest particle of all matter.

3. ELEMENTS= each element has a special name. You cannot simplify elements more then they already are. Atoms cannot change into different elements. Simplest type of pure substance.

4. PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS= all the elements are in the periodic table. the horizontal rows are called periods and the vertical rows are called groups. Elements in the same group are similar to each other. The metals are on the left and the non-metals are on the right. There are more metals than non-metals. You wont find compounds in th eperiodic table , only elements.

5. METALS= they are good conductors of heat and electricity ,they have a high density ,3 metals are magnetic (iron, cobalt and nickel) ,mercury is the only metal which is a liquid at room temperature.

6. NON-METALS= poor conductors (insulator), low density, 11 non-metals are gases at room temperature, 1 non-metal is a liquid at room temperature (bromine), carbon is a solid non-metal element (pure carbon can exist in two very different forms- graphite and diamond.

7. COMPOUNDS= when atoms of different elements join together, they make a compound. Compounds are substances that contain atoms of at least 2 elements.

8. CO2= carbon dioxide, H2O= water, O= oxygen etc.
