GCSE Computing - Memory

  1. RAM

    • Random Access Memory
    • Memory addresses can be read or written too
    • Stores an electrical charge to represent a value of '1'
    • Has a volatile memory
  2. ROM

    • Read Only Memory
    • Has non-volatile memory
    • Contents cannot be deleted
    • BIOS is a common chip for this type of memory
  3. Virtual

    • A procedure which comes into effect when all the RAM has been used up
      • Data held in the RAM that has not been accessed recently is sent to be stored temporarily on a section of the hard drive.
        • This "extends" the RAM capacity
          • The read-write time is far slower than of the RAM, so it is accessed far slower
  4. Cache

    • A store of data that allows future requests to be served quicker
    • It is very quick to read and write
    • Data that is chosen to be stored in a cache is often such that is frequently accessed
  5. Flash

    • Type of non-volatile memory
      • Uses solid state technology
        • No moving parts
    • Makes it more reliable and durable than other altenatives
