STV

  1. Used in local, devolved and European elections in Northern Ireland

    • Lib Dems and the electoral reform society want it to be use for general elections
    • quota= (number of votes cast) / ( number of seats in constituency +1) +1
      • This is how seats are allocated.
  2. STV IN ACTION

    • Northern Ireland assembly: election 2016
      • Green and People Before Profit party benefit the most over traditional unionist. Although they received the most votes, Green and P4P benefited more from second preference votes
  3. ADVANTAGES

    • close relationship between number of votes and the seats won(proportional)
    • fairer on smaller parties and particularly good where there is minorities in the population
    • it allows the voter to choose candidates of the same party
    • likely to produce a coalition government
  4. DISADVANTAGES

    • VERY complicated system- this is feared to alienate voters
      • it could be complicated for electoral officials. Leading to results being delayed.
    • Likely to produce a coalition government
    • no link between mp and constituency
    • difficult to hold by-elections
