Psychology Unit 1
Memory
- Case Studies
- Atkinson + Shiffrin (1968)
- They said that memory is divided into three different stores (sensory, short and long)
- Bower and Springston (1970)
- Wanted to test the effect of chunking. The had two groups in which one was a control. The control group was given letter combinations such as FB,IPH,DTW,AIB and M. The experimental group was given the same letters but in different combinations, such as FBI, PHD,CIA and IBM. The second combination of letters makes 'sense' to us as we are used to those letters being in those cominations. The second combination remmembered more combinations that the control group and the researchers concluded that chunking improves recall from short term memory. This is because the second combination of letters is already stored in our long-term memory.
