Programming Languages

  1. Machine Code

    • Binary Notation - 0s and 1s
    • Specific to the architecture, which depends on the hardware design of the processor.
    • Instructions operate on bytes of data.
  2. Object Orientated Language

    • To address the problem of code re-use, OOP was developed. It involves objects ( with properties ) and methods ( interactions).
    • The objects can only be accessed via the methods associated with it ( Encapsulation ) - More secure.
  3. Levels

    • Binary = Machine Code. Low Level = Assembly Language. High Level = Procedural. High Level+ = OO Programming
  4. Assembly Language

    • Involves Mnemonics (Abbreviations)
    • Labels for memory locations/variables.
    • Machine specific/ orientated. Also called Low Level Languages.
    • 1-1 Correspondence with Machine Code, Used for manipulating the hardware of the computer.
  5. Procedural Language

    • Program states what to do and how to do it.
    • Program statements are in easy to read blocks, each block is a procedure or function.
    • Logic of program is given as a series of procedure calls, It uses programming constructs such as Sequence, Selection & Iteration.
