Variation
Variation is important because it allows for increased chance of species survival. If the environment changes (naturally like weather, or unnaturally like a new predator is introduced), variation within a population means that it is more likely that at least some members of the species will survive.
Variation can be CONTINUOUS or DISCONTINUOUS. Continuous variation is where there are many different values eg height.
Discontinuous variation is where there are only a set number of values eg green or brown beetles (but no other possible colours)

Over time this can lead to a change in the make up of a population. For example if the environment changes and becomes colder, animals with more fur will survive longer, look healthier and therefore mate more (produce more offspring). This means they are more likely to pass on their genes to the next generation and over time, the whole population will become furrier!
