C1 SUMMARY

THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE

99% of the Earth's atmosphere is mainly NITROGEN and OXYGEN. The remaining 1% is mainly ARGON, with tiny amounts of CARBON DIOXIDE.

CHANGES IN THE ATMOSPHERE:

Carbon Dioxide dissolved in the sea and became trapped in fossil fuels.

AIR POLLUTION

Elements are made of atoms. Non-metal atoms combine to make molecules.

Earth's atmosphere was probably formed by volcanic activity.

Pollutants are released by NATURAL PROCESSES like VOLCANOES and by HUMAN ACTIVITY like BURNING FUELS

Chemical reactions involve arranging atoms into new substances which have different PROPERTIES.

Plants evolved. Photosynthesis removed carbon dioxide and released oxygen

As the Earth's new atmosphere cooled, water vapor condensed to form oceans

Coal is carbon. In a plentiful air supply in burns to form CO2. In limited air it burns to form poisonous carbon monoxide
