Atomic structure
Subatomic particles
All atoms have a similar basic structure. Atoms are composed of three fundamental subatomic particles called protons, neutrons and electrons.
Protons are positively charged particles found in the central nucleus of the atom.
Neutrons are neutral particles, which are also found in the nucleus. Neutrons are slightly heavier than protons.
Electrons are negatively charged particles that are found outside the nucleus. They exist energy levels shells that surround the nucleus. The mass of an electron is much less than that of a proton.
Isotopes
Each element can be represented by a unique symbol.
