The Labelling Theory
states that functionalist theories are problem takers - they assume that official statistics are a true and accurate representation of crime ; they week to find the cause of crime and to provide solutions to the problem of crime
Labelling takes an interactionist view
ask how and why some people/actions are labelled as deviant
looks at the effects of being labelled
regard official statistics as social constructs
crime = product of interactions between suspects and police (not a result of wider external social forces such as blocked opportunity structures)
