Transmission

Slides in this set (3)

  1. Data Exchange/transmissions

    • -Methods of transmitting data:
    • Simplex, this is where signals only go in one direction at a time.
    • Duplex, this is where it can travel in two directions at once.
    • 1/2 Duplex, signals that can go in both directions but not simultaneously.
    • -Two ways of transmitting data are:
    • Serial, this is where bits of data are transferred at one time over wire.
    • Parallel, this is where bits of data are transferred simultaneously-an entire byte at one time.
    • Advantages
    • Serial is good over large distances.
    • Parallel is good because it can transfer signals at a much raster rate.
    • Disadvantages
    • Serial, is very complex, data is broken into individual parts.
    • Parallel, its only good for short distances.
  2. Transmission methods

    • There are three types of cables:
    • UTP/STP, this contains pairs of copper wires which are used for LANs.
    • Co-axial, This is a solid copper wire with thick shielding used to connect the TV and aerial.
    • Fibre optic, these are strands of glass carry data as light and is used for backbone of a network.
