Metals are good Conductors
Non-metals and gasses are poor conductors
Poor Conductors are called Insulators
Heat energy is transferred from the hot end to the cool end
Electrons in metal leave their atoms and move in the metal as free electrons
The atoms left behind are now charged metal ions
The ions are packed closely together and vibrate continually
The hotter the metal, the more kinetic energy these vibrations have
The kinetic energy is transfered from hot parts to the cool parts by the free electrons
These move through the structure of the metal, colliding with ions as they go.
The electrons in a metal leave their atoms and move around the metal as free electrons. The metals left behind are now charged metal ions. These ions are packed closely together and vibrate continually. The hotter the metal, the more kinetic energy these vibrations have. The Kinetic Energy is transfered from hot parts to the cool parts by the free electrons. The free electrons move through the structure of the metal, colliding with ions as they go.
