Mixtures Vs Compounds
Slides in this set (4)
-
- Mixtures
- Elements are not Bonded to each other
- Elements hold their own properties
- Formulas can have Any Ratio
- Easy to Separate
- eg. Saltwater
- NaCl . H2O
- Compounds
- Elements are Bonded to each other
- The Compound has its own properties
- Formulas have Fixed Ratios
- Difficult to Separate
- eg. Table Salt
- NaCl
-
- NaCl . H2O is made by mixing salt and water.
- Salt and water do not chemically react however.
- Saltwater has properties of both salt and water.
- Any amount of Salt mixed with any amount of Water makes saltwater. The Ratio is Not Fixed.
- Salt and Water can be easily separated through Crystalisation.
- Saltwater is therefore a Mixture
-
- NaCl is made by Reacting Sodium and Chlorine
- 2Na + Cl2 ---> 2NaCl
- For Every 2Na, 1Cl2 is needed. The Ratio is fixed.
- Sodium is a Reactive, Alkaline Metal
- Chlorine is a Reactive, Toxic Gas
- Salt is an Edible, Crystalline Solid
- Sodium and Chlorine are Difficult to Separate
- Table Salt is therefore a Compound
