  2. Systems

    • What are Systems?
    • -An ICT system is a set - up consisting of hardware, software, data and the people who use them. It usually includes communication technology, such as the internet.
    • ICT AND COMPUTERS ARE NOT THE SAME THING.
    • Computers are the hardware that is often part of an ICT system.
    • It is the power of the computers and the communication that allows ICT systems to become so important.
    • ICT systems are used in a number of environments, such as:
    • -Offices-Shops-Factories
    • Also, fields such as:-Farming-Medicine-Communications
    • ICT systems can:
    • 1) Process a lot of information at a time, and rapidly too
    • 2) More productive- can complete a greater number of tasks
    • 3) Able to transmit and receive information very quickly
    • Three main types of ICT systems are:
    • 1) Information Systems: This type of ICT system is focused on managing data and information.
    • 2) Control systems: mainly control machines, they use: INPUT, PROCESS and OUTPUT.
    • 3) Communication systems: The output of these systems is the successful transport of data from one place to another.

  4. Hardware- External + Internal

    • Hardware is the generic term for any part of the computer that you can physically touch, hold, grasp etc.
    • External Hardware:
    • Hardware are the physical parts that make up the computer.
    • The main examples are the mouse and keyboard.. Other examples include: monitor, printer and microphone.
    • Internal hardware:
    • Internal hardware is what is actually inside the computer.
    • Example include:
    • -CPU
    • -Motherboard
    • -Fan

  5. Software...

    • What is 'software'?
    • Software is a set of instructions which tell both the computer and the hardware what to do.
    • The main example of software is an 'operating system'. Such as Windows or IOS.
    • An example of what an operating system actually does is:
    • Dealing with errors and users instructions.
    • Software is A LOT codes telling the computer what to do.
    • Software...
    • Caption: Examples of computer software.
  6. Data,,,

    • What even is 'Data'?! Data, is words, numbers, dates, images and sounds, without context.
    • Data items need to be part of a structure, such as a sentence, in order to give them meaning.
    • Data can become information when entered into a table, as an example. E.g. A chefs rota table in a kitchen, just there names is data. When there working hours are put alongside it, it becomes information, as now it has context.
    • Data,,,
    • Caption: An example of data.
  7. Databases!

    • A database is a computerized system. It is very useful for searching AND storing data! They are for useful. Especially, to clearly see data you have collected etc.
    • For example, a library may use a database to record information like what books have been taken out, and when they must be given back.
    • A database should always include a key field.
    • A key field is a unique identifier for each record.
    • An example of a key field:
    • Car REG.
    • yh
    • Databases!
    • Caption: An example of a database.
  8. Networks & Communications

    • There are two main types of network:
    • LAN- Local are network
    • WAN- Wide area network
    • LAN: A LAN covers a small area. E.G. One site or building
    • WAN: A WAN covers a much larger geographical area, most WAN's are made from several LAN's connected together.
    • The internet is a WAN.
    • A school network is usually a LAN.
    • LAN's are usually connected to WAN's. As a school network is usually connected to the internet.
    • WAN's can be connected together using the internet, leased lines or satellite links.
