Restless Earth

Restless Earth - Revision

• NEED TO KNOW:
• Structure of the Earth
• Composition of the layers of the Earth
• Convection currents
• Earth’s magnetic field
• Global distribution of plate boundaries
• Types of plate boundary
• Types of volcano
• Restless Earth

Structure of the Earth

•
• Caption: Labelled layers of the Earth
• Crust Core
• -Oceanic - Completely liquefied
• Not as thick - molten rock and metal
• Less dense
• - Continental
• Thicker
• Heavier and more dense
• Mantle
• - Upper
• Along with crust, makes up the Lithosphere
• -Lower
• Made up of molten magma

Composition of the layers

•
• Caption: This table shos the breakdown of each layer in the earths structure.

Convection Currents

• Convection currents
• in the mantle are caused by heat generated by the core.
• This heat is due to radioactive decay of unstable
• elements in the core.
• As heat rises from
• the core it causes the molten rock in the mantle to move, which in turn leads
• to the movement of the section of the Earth’s crust called Tectonic Plates
• above it.
• -The liquid outer layer of the core is made of iron and as it moves
• it creates a magnetic field much like
• an electrical dynamo.
•
• Caption: An inside view of the earth and the directions of convection currents occurring in the mantle.

Tectonic plate boundaries.

•
• Caption: This table shows the types of plates and an example of where they can be found around the world.
•
• Caption: This map shows the distribution of the plate boundaries, which ones they are and the direction of which they are moving.
