Flashcards
CHEMISTRY C1 1
Cards in this deck (21)
- 1What are elements made of?Atoms
- 2How many types of atom does an element contain? One
- 3How many types of atom does a compound contain? Two or more
- 4What is the basic structure of an atom?An atom has a tiny nucleus in its centre surrounded by electrons
- 5What are atoms made of?Protons, neutrons and electrons
- 6What kind of charge does an electron have?Negative
- 7What kind of electric charge does a neutron have?No charge, they're neutral
- 8What kind of electric charge do protons have?Positive
- 9What is an atomic number? The number of Protons OR Electrons
- 10What is a mass number?The number of Protons + Neutrons
- 11How are atoms arranged in the periodic table? In order of their atomic number
- 12How are electrons arranged in an atom?In energy levels or shells
- 13What determines the way an element reacts? The number of electrons in its outermost shell
- 14Why are the atoms of Group 0 elements so unreative? They have full outer shells, making them stable
- 15What does the formula of a compound show? The number and types of different atoms bonded together to make that compound.
- 16What is formed when a metal reacts with a non metal?Ions
- 17What happens in ionic bonding?Metal atoms form positively charged ions and non-metals form negatively charged ions. These oppositely charged ions are attracted to each other in ionic bonding.
- 18What is covalent bonding?Atoms of non-metals reacting by sharing electrons.
- 19Can we create new atoms? No, atoms cannot be created or destroyed.
- 20What is a balanced equation? An equation with equal numbers of each type of atom on both sides of the arrow.
- 21How is the total mass of reactants related to the total mass of the product? They are always equal, atoms cannot be lost during a reaction.
