Flashcards
CHEMISTRY C1 5
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1How do we make smaller, more useful hydrocarbon molecules from big hydrocarbon molecules?Mix them with steam and heating them to a high temperature or passing the vapours over a hot catalyst
- 2What does cracking hydrocarbons produce?Saturated hydrocarbons that are used as fuel and unsaturated hydrocarbons
- 3What is an unsaturated hydrocarbon? An alkene, alkenes react with orange bromine water, turning it colourless. Alkenes are double bonded
- 4What are plastics made out of?Polymers
- 5What are polymers?Large molecules created when monomers join together. This is called polymerisation
- 6What are smart polymers?Polymers that may have their properties changed by temperature, light or other changes in their surroundings
- 7What are hydrogels?Polymers that can trap water, they are used for contact lenses
- 8What are plastic bottles made out of?PET
- 9What does biodegradable mean? When something can be decomposed by the actions of microorganisms in soil
- 10What can we make biodegradable plastics from?Plant material such as cornstarch
- 11What are the two methods used to create ethanol?fermentation and hydration
- 12What is fermentation?Enzymes in yeast breakdown the sugar into ethanol and carbon dioxide gas
- 13What is hydration? When ethene gas is reacted with steam in the presence of a catalyst to produce ethanol
