Neutralisation Reactions

Metal Oxides - Base

Metal oxides react with acids to form salts and water.

E.g. copper oxide + sulphuric acid -> copper sulphate + water

CuO + H2SO4 -> CuSO4 + H20

Generally speaking, acid + base -> salt + water

Metal + Acid

Metal + acid -> salt + hydrogen

AKA M.A.S.H (Metal + Acid -> Salt + Hydrogen)

For example, magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2

zinc + sulphuric acid → zinc sulfate + hydrogenZn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2

Reactions with water

Metal + water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen

e.g Potassium + water -> Potassium Hydroxide + hydrogen

Displacement Reactions

When one metal is more reactive than the other, it displaces it.

For example, aluminium + iron oxide -> aluminium oxide + iron

Equations with carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide is produced whenever an acid reacts with a carbonate.

A metal with carbonate has carbon dioxide.

calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid → calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide

CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H20 + CO2
