Slides in this set (4)

  1. Objectives

    • Chapter 4 – Atomic Structure
    • Know your Ch. 1 - 3 Objectives.
    • Know the symbols and names for the elements to be memorized.
    • Know how the model of the atom has evolved since Democritus’s time.
    • Be able to describe the four principles of Dalton’s Atomic Theory. Explain which of the principles still hold true today.
    • Know the names of the scientists behind the discovery of each subatomic particle and be able to describe their experiments and what the results illustrated.
    • Describe the evidence for the existence of electrons, protons and neutrons. Describe the properties and location with the atom of these subatomic particles.
    • Be able to define isotopes, mass number and atomic number.
    • Discuss atoms in terms of their numbers of electrons, protons and neutrons. Be able to write and read nuclear notation (like the charts we practiced in class).
    • Recognize isotopes of an element from their nuclear notation.
    • Explain the concept of weighted averages.
    • Use isotopic data to calculate the atomic mass (a weighted average) of an element.

  3. Slide 3

    • More FLM Practice – Rates & Density
    • Gasoline is sold at a price of exactly $2.19 per gallon and your car gets 29 miles to the gallon. How many miles can you drive if you buy exactly $47 dollars of gas?
    • If water flows from a faucet at a rate of 45.4 ml/sec, how many m3 of water can you collect in 30.0 minutes? 1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3.
  4. Slide 4

    • You are given 99.4 ml of gold that has a price of exactly $39.30 per gram. How many $20 gift cards can you buy with the money you raise from selling your gold? The density of gold is 19.3 g/ml. **Ignore sig figs on this problem.
    • A comedian gives a 75 minute comedy show each Friday night. She tells an average of 8 jokes per minute. How many of her comedy shows do you need to watch to hear 2400 jokes? Ignore sig figs here too.
