China's once child policy limits the number of children to one, that a couple can have. This is done by having lots of incentives to them to only have once child. For example, you would get longer maternity leave, free education, and better housing, however, if you did not stick to this policy you would be fined a percentage of your income also, your would not have access to these benefits. Over the years there has been a few exceptions like if you live in a rural area and your first child is a girl or that child has a physical disability, you may have another child, because children are still needed to work on the farms. Not only that is one/both parents has a disability or they both are the only child there parents has they ma also have a second child as they will still need to look after there parents/ageing generation. This policy has been very effective as it has prevented up to 400 million births, as well as bring the fertility rate down from 5.8 to 1.8 in just over 40 years. But some people say this is because of older policy for example having longer gaps between children. Not only that Chinese's copies want to be more wealthy which means they can do that by having fewer children. This policy encourages sustainable development as the population is not growing so quickly so resources are not being used as fast, allowing more for future generations.
