1Conscience is a person's moral sense of right and wrong, it is viewed as moral conduct for human behaviour. The question of why we have a conscience and where is comes from is debated. Theories from all different ethical beliefs vary of the matter, as the origin of conscience is unknown. There is a possibility of conscience being [blank_start]God[blank_end] given and also through external forces. The is debate within conscience, weather it is [blank_start]innate[blank_end], God given or knowledge from [blank_start]a posteriori[blank_end]. For example [blank_start]Freud[blank_end] think it's gained through childhood experience. However, Aquinas would disagree saying it is God given. Conscience is an internal thought in which we separated right and wrong.

2[blank_start]Sigmund Freud[blank_end] was an Austrian neurologist who concluded that the human personality consisted of three things and compared them to an [blank_start]iceberg[blank_end] in the early 20th century. Those three things are the [blank_start]superego[blank_end], [blank_start]ego[blank_end] and the [blank_start]ID[blank_end]. The [blank_start]superego[blank_end], is the set of moral controls given to us by outside influences. It is our moral code or conscience and is often in conflict with the id. The ego is the conscious self, the part seen by the outside world. The id is the the unconscious self, the part of the mind containing the basic drives and repressed memories. The ID is our thoughts and desires, and if those are deemed as unacceptable behaviour in society then those thoughts and desires are repressed. It is amoral and has no concern about right and wrong and is only concerned with itself. Freud believed that conscience is clearly connected with the sense of guilt as when we have when we go against our conscience. Freud did not believe in any absolute moral law and believed that all our moral codes, the contents of our consciences, are shaped by our experiences. Freud was noted for his forward theories. Freud created the theory of the Oedipus complex to show his understanding of humans guilt and the need for conscience. He thought that all children aged 1-3 years old, experience the Oedipus complex as a stage of development. The Oedipus complex is a male child's desire for sexual involvement with his mother which results in a rivalry with the father. The equivalent for female children is the Electra complex. Freud recognised that the Electra complex is less strong than the Oedipus complex but in both there are feelings of guilt. He saw this as a natural desire and part of a child's moral development. Therefore Freud believes that conscience develops from this guilt. The child knows that it is wrong to sexually desire one parent and to want to kill the other. But it develops from the child's physical needs for love and affection. Freud believes that this stage ends when the child represses its sexual instincts and identifies with the parent of the same sex rather than seeing them as a rival. The resolution of the Oedipus complex is the origin of the moral development of a person. Freud believes that it is from the physical needs of the child for love and affection that the psyche of the human being develops. The breaking of rules in the conscience is linked to the superego. Therefore conscience is just the inner sense of right and wrong acquired through external forces.
