- Previous theory was plum pudding theory, atom filled with positively charged matter with randomly dispersed negative electrons.
- Rutherford expected: Expected nearly all to pass straight through
- Rutherford observed: Most passed straight through, some deflected and some reflected.
- Rutherford concluded: Since most pass through, most of atom is empty space. Since some reflected/deflected suggested the mass of the atom is concentrated in small positively charged nucleus.

- Alpha particles are helium nuclei.
- Beta particles are electrons
- Every particles has a antiparticle, the antiparticle for an electron is the positiron
- Neutrinos are mass-less and charge-less particles and have anti-neutrino antiparticles
- Fundamental Particles
