- two plates are moving in the same way at different speeds or different ways.
- they move across a fault line
- they then lock.
- the point they lock is called the focus.
- pressure builds up
- the plate then release and the pressure is released
- the pressure is released In waves of energy known as seismic waves which are the cause of earthquakes
- the point above the focus is known as the epicentre
- e.g. san Andrea's Fault Line

-

- this is a plate where the two plates involved must be continental and moving towards each other.
- because both of the plates are both continental they cant be destroyed, insetae they buckle.
- the land then rises
- the new land that ahs risen then forms a fold mountain
- e.g. the European Alps
-

- The continental plate and oceanic plate move towards each other
- the oceanic plate subducts because it is danser
- as the plate subducts it creates friction which melts the oceanic plate
- this forms a magma chamber and pressure builds up
- when the pressure is too much it expels it in a violent explosion
- side vents may form as well
- of the side of the volcano lava will flow, pyroclastic flows also rush
- steam Is also expelled as water enters the magma chamber
- an example is mount st helens
