  1. RAM (random access memory)

    • RAM is the main memory in the computer and is required to run the operating system and applications.
    • The more RAM available to the computer , the more programs and data it can load at the same time.
    • Data gets copied from the secondary storage to the RAM for quicker access to the data for programs.
    • RAM is volatile and looses its data when the computer is switched off, which is why it is only used as temporary storage.
  2. ROM (read only memory)

    • ROM is non-volatile and keeps its memory even when the computer is off.
    • The computer needs data in the RAM to do anything, however, since data is lost when the computer turns off, ROM is used.
    • ROM often contains the boot-up sequence which loads the operating system in order for the computer to run.
    • ROM cannot be overwritten by the computer, hence being read-only.
  3. Motherboard

    • The central printed circuit board (PCB) that holds the crucial components of the system.
    • The motherboard is made up of buses which are circuit which connect one part of the motherboard to the next.
    • The speed of the bus which is measured in megahertz refers to how much data can move across the bus at the same
  4. Graphics Cards
