Slides in this set (4)

  1. Compression

    • Compression
  2. What is compression?

    • Data compression, (source coding, or bit-rate reduction) involves encoding information using fewer bits than the original representation. Compression can be either lossy or lossless depending on how the file has been compressed.
    • The process of reducing the size of a data-file is referred to as data compression.
  3. Lossy Compression

    • Lossy Compression
    • Lossy compression is the class of data encoding methods that uses non-precise approximations and discarding of partial data to represent the content with a much smaller file size.
  4. Lossless Compression

    • Lossless Compression
    • Lossless compression is a compression technique that decompresses data back to its original form without any loss. The decompressed file and the original are identical. All compression methods used to compress text, databases and other business data are lossless.
