Flashcards
Atomic Structure
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1Atomic Structure - P4Atomic Structure - P4
- 2Isotopes- Isotopes are Different Forms of the Same Element
- 3Nuclear Radiation (Alpha Particles)Alpha Particles (α) don't penetrate very far into materials and are stopped quickly. They can only travel a few cm in air and are absorbed by a sheet of paper.Because of their size they are strongly ionising.
- 4Nuclear Radiation (Beta Particles)Beta Particles (β) are High-Speed Electrons released by the nucleus. They are moderately ionising and penetrate moderately far into materials before colliding. They have a range in air of a few metres. They are absorbed by a sheet aluminium (around 5mm).
- 5Nuclear Radiation (Gamma Ray Particles)Gamma Rays (γ) are waves of electromagnetic radiation released by the nucleus. They penetrate far into materials without being stopped and travel a long distance through the air. This means that they are weakly ionising. The can be absorbed by metres of concrete.
- 6Half-Life- The half-life is the time taken for the number of radioactive nuclei in an isotope to halve.
- 7IrradiationExposure to Radiation is called Irradiation.
Ionising radiation can enter the living cells and can damage the cells or kill them off completely. - 8Contamination- Contamination is Radioactive Particles Getting onto Objects.
