General Roots of polynomials tips

Doc Boff Further Maths AS level English 3 cards

Cards in this deck (3)

  1. 1What is the method of substitution? If our roots are simple / linear (e.g. 3p , 3q and 3r) then we can use y=mx+c and rearrange for x, which can then be subbed into the original polynomial. In our example of 3p , 3q and 3r we can say y=3x, and therefore x=y/3, which we then sub in.
  2. 2If the roots aren't linear, what method must we use?We must calculate the new sum, the product, etc and replace the coefficients in the original equation
  3. 3Remember that if we have the new sum to be 17/64, then -b/a for the new sum is what?-17/64
