Cards in this deck (10)
- 1What is Secondary storage and when is it used?A type of storage that is non-volatile, and is used to store data when the computer is turned off. An example is the internal hard disk and CDs.
- 2Describe the 3 different types of storage devices with advantages of each.Magnetic - This includes floppy disks and the hard disk. It is reliable, portable and cost effective.
Optical - This includes CDs and DVDs. They have the ability to be written to, are portable, and quite sturdy.
Solid state - This includes USB and flash drives. These have no moving parts so are very reliable, and they are very small and light so good for portability. - 3What is the function of the operating system? It controls the hardware (peripherals) and provides a user interface.
- 4Convert the number 53 to binary and hexadecimal.Binary - 0011 0101
Hex - 35 - 5What is data Validation? The process of checking data as it is entered to ensure that it is valid.
- 6Describe the three main topologies with one advantage and one disadvantage of eachBus - When all the devices are connected by a single 'backbone' cable. It is easy to install but if a fault develops in the main cable, the whole network fails.
Ring - When all the devices are connected in a ring to two other devices. There is no data collisions, but if the main cable fails, the whole network fails.
Star - Each device is connected by its own cable to the hub or switch. It is very reliable as there are no data collisions, but it is expensive and difficult to install. - 7What are the three different types of logic gates?AND, NOT, OR
- 8What is an input and output device? An input device is a hardware device used to input data into a computer system for processing. An output device is a hardware device that outputs data.
- 9What is the purpose of the CPU?The purpose of the Central Processing Unit is to fetch, process and execute instructions from the main memory. This is the core of every computer system.
- 10What is RAM?Random Access Memory is the main memory of a computer that stores data, applications, and the operating system that is in use. The RAM is volatile, as it requires power to remember its contents.
