Flashcards
Earth Science Grade 5
Cards in this deck (26)
- 1atmospherethe layer of gases that surrounds the earth and protects it from too much sunlight
- 2lithosphererocks, plants, and minerals make up this layer
- 3the crustthe outer part of the lithosphere
- 4people build homes and cities on this layerlithosphere
- 5Earth's lithosphere containsrocks, soil, and minerals
- 6the center layer of the earthcore
- 7corecenter layer of the earth, made up of solid, very hot metals
- 8mantlelayer below the crust, partly solid and partly semi-solid
- 9What did early geographers notice in the 1500s?the continents fit together like puzzle pieces
- 10plate tectonics theorysays that the earth's surface is made up of about 20 moving plates
- 11how continents moveexplained by plate tectonics theory
- 12Plate movement causes what?earthquakes, mountains, and volcanoes
- 13weatheringbreaking down or physically changing rock
- 14When does water cause physical weathering?Breaks a rock into pieces by expanding when it freezes
- 15hypothesisa guess or idea
- 16scientific theoryplate tectonics
- 17igneous rockwhen melted mantle cools
- 18metamorphic rockigneous or sedimentary rock that has been changed by heat or pressure
- 19sedimentary rocksand grains that have been cemented together
- 20sandoccurs when weathered, igneous rock breaks down
- 21deltanew land formed at the mouth of a river by deposition
- 22fossilthe remains of any organism
- 23the rock cyclethe process of how rocks change form
- 24erosioncaused by strong winds or water

2. atmosphere - gases around Earth
3. hydrosphere - water on and around earth
4. lithosphere - layer of rocks, soil, and minerals - 26Pangeasupercontinent that existed millions of years ago; split apart into seven continents through plate movement
