Flashcards
C2 - Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1How are the elements of the Periodic Table arranged?Elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic mass, in periods so that those with similar chemical properties are in the same group
- 2What are the properties of the groups? (1, Central Block, 7 and 0)Metals are in Groups 1, 2 and Central Block
Group 1 = Alkali Metals
Group 2 = Halogens
Group 0 = Noble Gases
Central Block = Transition Metals - 3What are the trends of Periods and Groups? (1, 7 and 0)Groups have the same number of electrons on their outer shell
The mass of elements get bigger from left to right on a period
Group 1 = more reactive as you go down
Group 7 = less reactive as you go down
Group 0 = full outer shell, unreactive - 4What is the Atomic Number and Mass Number?Atomic Number of an element is the smaller number at the bottom. It shows how many protons there are in an atom of an element
The mass number is at the top and is the larger of the two. It shows how many protons and neutrons there added together in an atom of an element. - 5What is an Isotope? Does being one affect the atoms chemical properties? It is an atom with a differing number of Neutrons to other atoms of the same element.
They have the same electronic configuration, so they still react the same.
The mass number changes only. - 6What does the Electronic Configuration show?It shows how the electrons are arranged around the Nucleus of an atom on shells.
- 7What is Relative Atomic Mass?RAM is the weighted average for the different isotopes of an element.
Takes into account the Relative Isotopic Masses and the abundance of each. - 8How doe you work out RAM?(% of isotope 1 × mass of isotope 1) + (% of isotope 2 × mass of isotope 2) ÷ 100
Example: In any sample of Chlorine 25% will be 37Cl and 75% 35Cl.
(25 × 37) + (75 × 35)∕100
= 925 + 2625∕100
= 35.3
