About Academic Writing and Projects
GoConqr OriginalWhat this page covers
This unit sits in the strand Thinking and Academic Writing, within the subject Personal and career development. Most of what is listed is mind maps, so it works well if you like to see an essay broken into branches. A smaller set of quizzes, flashcards and notes sits alongside them.
The resources follow the journey of a piece of writing: choosing a topic, planning, drafting, editing and checking your sources. A few reach into project work, with maps on the EPQ artefact, the student and supervisor relationship, and finishing the Personal Project.
Where to start
- Choose a topic. Open the mind map called Topic. It asks whether a topic fits EPQ requirements, how much time you have, and whether help is available.
- Plan the essay. Try Planning an essay and Route Map. They show how to number branches into paragraph order and jot key points under each section.
- Build paragraphs. The PEE map explains Point, Evidence and Explanation, with a short point first, then a quote and an explanation.
- Edit. The map on what to edit in a final piece of writing asks whether your paragraphs link and your ideas are fully developed.
Command words and plagiarism
Many essays go wrong because the question is misread. The flashcard deck Command or Process Words for Essay Writing lists words such as describe, define, outline, compare and contrast. After going through it, try the quiz Command words in assignments - match the word to the definition.
For sources, the Assumption College Thonburi Plagiarism Quiz asks what counts as plagiarism and what happens when a source is cited incorrectly. The Paraphrasing Process map is a useful companion.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a map first, then take a quiz on the same idea to see what stuck. If a question catches you out, go back to the matching branch. Then redraw the map from memory, or turn its branches into flashcards of your own.
Every resource here was made by GoConqr users and is free to open. Choose one map today and see where it leads.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the mind map called Topic if you are still choosing a project or essay subject. If you already have a question, open Planning an essay, then the PEE map for building paragraphs. Both are short to read and lead naturally into the other resources on the page.
What do the mind maps cover?
The mind maps cover the whole writing process: planning, essay structure, paraphrasing, objective language, argumentative essays, editing and evaluation. Some focus on projects, such as the EPQ artefact, the student and supervisor relationship, and the Personal Project. Others help with a university admissions essay or a personal statement.
Are there quizzes and flashcards as well?
Yes, though they are a small set next to the mind maps. There are over five quizzes, including the plagiarism quiz, an essay organization quiz and a command words matching quiz. Flashcard decks cover command words for assignments, and a few cover written communication and writing skills.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Which levels and exams do they suit?
Most resources suit school students, and some mention the EPQ, A-level EPQ or IB. Others suit university students and professional candidates, for example the maps on academic discourse and admissions essays. Teachers can use the maps and quizzes as ready-made material for writing lessons.
What if I can't find the topic I need?
Try a nearby resource first. The maps on writing strategies, essay structure and generating and organizing ideas apply to many kinds of writing. If your topic is still missing, you can make your own mind map or flashcards with a free account and build exactly what you need.
