About Anaesthesia and Analgesia

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The unit follows an anaesthetic from start to finish. You will find resources on pre-anaesthetic assessment, premedication and sedation, induction and maintenance, intubation, monitoring, recovery and post-operative care. Analgesia has its own material, including the quiz Clinical Pain and Analgesia and the slides Pain Control- Cats.

Where to start

If you like to test yourself first, begin with the Vet 201 Anesthesiology study guide quizzes. They run chapter by chapter, from the history of anaesthetic agents to endotracheal tubes, waste anaesthetic gases and local anaesthetics. Anesthesia & Analgesia Quiz 1 asks about the surgical plane, anticholinergic drugs and which drugs cross the placental barrier.

If you prefer to read first, the slides Stages of Anaesthesia and Principles of Intravenous, Inhalation and Chamber Induction set out the basics, such as the advantages of intravenous induction.

Equipment and species

  • The flashcard deck Anaesthetic Circuit Identification lists circuits such as the Bain and the coaxial Lack, with their circuit factors.
  • Mind maps cover breathing systems, monitoring, muscle relaxation and anaesthetic emergencies.
  • Species sets include horses, sheep, birds, reptiles, exotics and cats, plus a canine anaesthesia flowchart.

Using quizzes and maps together

Work through a mind map to see how a topic fits together, then take a quiz on the same topic. Note what you missed and go back to the matching flashcards. Candidates for the CPE can use the mind maps on CPE Anesthesia, which break the task into parts such as assessing risk status, designing a protocol and calculating doses and volumes.

Where it sits

This unit belongs to the Anaesthesia and Surgery strand of Veterinary medicine. Choose one topic that you find hardest, open a quiz on it, and see where you stand.

Frequently asked questions

Which quiz should I start with?

Start with Anesthesia & Analgesia Quiz 1 for a broad check on the surgical plane, anticholinergics and placental transfer. If you are following a course text, the Vet 201 Anesthesiology study guides go chapter by chapter, from the history of agents to local anaesthetics.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so it is worth checking anything you plan to rely on against your own course notes.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover anaesthetic drugs, breathing systems, monitoring, surgical muscle relaxation, premedication contraindications and anaesthetic emergencies. Others look at equine, exotic, reptile and bird anaesthesia, and there are several maps built around the CPE Anesthesia parts.

Is there anything for the CPE?

Yes. The CPE Anesthesia mind maps are split into parts. They mention a preanaesthetic examination, anaesthetic risk status, designing an anaesthetic protocol and calculating doses and volumes. Use them alongside the drug and equipment quizzes.

Which animals are covered?

Along with general small animal material, there are resources on horses, sheep, ruminants and pigs, birds, reptiles and other exotics. There is also a flowchart on feline anaesthesia, one on canine anaesthesia and slides on pain control in cats.

Can I save my scores or make my own sets?

A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. This is useful if a topic you need is thin here, because you can build a set that fits your course.
