GROUP PROBLEM SOLVINGGGG

Reactive/Proactive problem solving

Reactive

Responding to a crisis or dilemma that requires attention and action in a relatively brief time frame.

Proactive

An anticipated situation focuses your attention and triggers the problem solving process before a crisis occurs

Deciding whether to problem solve

Are the people who have responsibility and resources for addressing the problem committed to resolving it?

What might happen if nothing was done to resolve the problem?

Are adequate time and resources available to resolve the problem?

Does the problem merit the effort and resources required to make significant change?

Steps in Group Problem solving

Identifying the problem

Generating pot. solutions

Eval pot. solutions

Selecting the solution

Implementing the solution

Evaluating the outcome

Identifying the problem

An identifiable discrepancy exists between the current and desired situations

Describe the problem precisey

Confirm the problems with multiple sources of information

Allow adequate time for problem identification

Monitor problem solving context

Generate Potential Solutions

Brain storming

Brain Writing

Nominal group technique

Evaluating potential solutions

In order to make an informed decision, each of the potential solutions should be evaluated. This involves two problem-solving steps

1. Delineating the positives and negatives of each pot. Solution

Use PMI

2. outlining the tasks for the potential solutions
