About Flight Controls and Autoflight

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources here follow the flight control chain from the pilot's input to the surface that moves. The mind map Primary Flight Controls sets out ailerons, elevators and the rudder, and notes that roll spoilers supplement ailerons on large aircraft. The Secondary Flight Controls map groups lift devices (slats and flaps) and trim devices. Control Runs compares mechanical control, with rods and cables, against hydraulic control.

Where to start

Begin with the three core mind maps in that order: primary, secondary, then control runs. They give you the vocabulary. Then move to the flashcard deck on secondary flight controls, which asks about the purpose of trimming in relation to stick forces and attitude. The Theory Of Flight deck revisits roll control, roll spoilers and how aircraft speed affects aileron use.

Tabs, ailerons and type-specific practice

The deck from bob tait covers balance tabs, anti-balance tabs, spring tabs, aileron spades and Frise ailerons. For a type-based test, the quiz on DHC-6-300 systems asks you to place trim tab and geared (servo) tab labels in the correct positions. There is also a quiz on CASA 212 flight controls and one on T-6 flight controls.

Autoflight

When the basics feel secure, turn to the autoflight material. It includes quizzes called AUTOFLIGHT and AUTOMATIC FLIGHT SYSTEM, a flashcard deck on autopilot, and another on automatic flight control displays. One mind map looks at the effects of an automatic flight control system on Chinook underslung load failures. A further quiz touches on fly-by-wire and how it works.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map, then take the matching quiz without looking. Note which answers you missed, return to the branch of the map that covers them, and retry. Flashcards suit short gaps in your day. Teachers can set a map as pre-reading and a quiz as a check afterwards.

This unit sits in the Aircraft Systems, Powerplant and Avionics strand of Aviation. Open a map, then try a quiz and see what sticks.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Primary Flight Controls mind map, then Secondary Flight Controls and Control Runs. Together they give you the layout of surfaces, lift and trim devices, and the way inputs reach them. After that, test yourself with one of the flight controls quizzes.

What do the mind maps cover?

The maps cover primary controls, secondary controls, control runs, flaps and slats, and general flight control systems. One more looks at automatic flight control system effects on Chinook underslung load failures. Branches explain which surfaces do what and how they are linked.

Are there resources on trim tabs and balance tabs?

Yes. One flashcard deck covers balance tabs, anti-balance tabs, spring tabs, aileron spades and Frise ailerons. Another asks about the purpose of trimming. The DHC-6-300 quiz also has you place trim tab and geared tab labels correctly.

Is autoflight included?

Yes. There are quizzes named AUTOFLIGHT and AUTOMATIC FLIGHT SYSTEM, plus flashcard decks on autopilot and on automatic flight control displays. They suit anyone moving from basic control surfaces to automated systems.

Are these resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.
