About Future, Conditional and Subjunctive

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The unit sits in the Verbs and Tenses strand of French language. It mixes three ways of looking ahead: the immediate future with aller, the simple future, and the subjunctive. Most of the material is flashcards, with mind maps, a set of notes and one quiz alongside.

Start with the immediate future

The notes called French - future tense explain that you use the right form of aller plus an infinitive to say what you are going to do. Then try the Immediate future deck, which asks for the formula and gives examples such as someone moving house next week. The futur proche, translate into english... deck gives you short sentences to turn into English.

Move on to the simple future

Next, look at irregular stems. The French Irregular Future Stems deck pairs verbs such as avoir, être, aller and faire with stems like aur, ser, ir and fer. The Irregular Future Verbs mind map shows the same verbs with example forms such as irai and aura. The Futur Simple + Futur Antérieur deck goes further, covering irregular verbs and when to use être in the futur antérieur.

Use maps, decks and the quiz together

  1. Read a mind map to see the pattern as a whole.
  2. Work through the matching flashcards until the forms feel familiar.
  3. Take the quiz Futur simple and futur avec aller to see what still needs work.

The French vacation (future) mind map is useful for putting this into practice, with plans for next year, who you will travel with and where you will stay. Parler de l'avenir adds vocabulary for talking about the wider future.

Conditional and subjunctive

For the conditional, there is a deck called There would be. For the subjunctive, the le subjonctif deck lists common verbs to conjugate, and there are further subjunctive decks too. Teachers can pick a deck to set as a starter or a revision task.

Choose one deck that matches what you are working on now, and add your own flashcards or maps if something is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start on this page?

Start with the immediate future. The notes called French - future tense explain the aller plus infinitive pattern, and the Immediate future flashcard deck lets you test the formula straight away. Once that feels comfortable, move to the irregular future stems and then the subjunctive decks.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are three. French vacation (future) sets out holiday plans for next year, including destinations, company and accommodation. Irregular Future Verbs shows stems for verbs such as aller, avoir, être, faire and pouvoir. Parler de l'avenir collects vocabulary for talking about the future, such as technological progress and developing countries.

Is there a quiz?

Yes. The quiz Futur simple and futur avec aller lets you check both the simple future and the aller-based future. It works well after you have gone through a mind map and a flashcard deck, because it shows which forms you still mix up.

Are the resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which level are these resources for?

All the resources here are at secondary level, so they suit school students working on French verbs. Teachers can use them as ready-made material for practice or revision, for example the flashcard decks on the futur proche or the subjunctive.

Is there anything on the conditional?

There is a flashcard deck called There would be, which is the place to begin for conditional phrasing. The page puts more weight on the future tenses and the subjunctive, so if you need extra conditional practice, you could build your own deck to fill the gap.
