About reading skills and comprehension flashcards

Using reading skills and comprehension flashcards

The decks on this page cover several ways to approach a text. Types of Context Clues looks at hints to word meanings, including definitions, synonyms and antonyms. Skimming and Scanning includes a comprehension check, while Snow White asks questions about a story.

For a starting point, try Types of Context Clues if unfamiliar words slow your reading. Work through the cards and see whether you can recognise each kind of clue before checking the explanation.

Move from cards to a text

Use Fact, opinion and bias to review those terms, or explore How to read a novel: characterisation when focusing on characters. If you want to apply a technique to a longer text, switch to notes on the unit page. A quiz can then give you another way to check your understanding.

Choose a deck that fits the skill you want to practise.

Frequently asked questions

Which flashcard deck is a useful place to start?

Types of Context Clues is a useful starting point if you want to practise working out word meanings from a text. Its cards cover clues such as definitions, examples, synonyms and antonyms. You can review the terms first, then return to the cards to check what you remember.

Are these flashcards free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed on this page is free to open and study without an account. The decks were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr. A free account also lets you save quiz scores and make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels and exams do the decks cover?

The page is mostly aimed at secondary-level study, with some university-level material too. School students and teachers can find decks for named exams, including National 5 English - Close reading question types and GCSE English Language Key Language Techniques. Other decks focus on reading skills without naming an exam.
