- 1Descriptive statisticsA way to summarise and describe our data but they don't allow us to make conclusion related to our hypothesis. E.g: mean, mode or median. It also includes graphs and charts an measures of dispersion.
- 2Inferential statisticsThese let us draw conclusions from findings and use complicated maths to state whether our results are significant or just due to chance.
- 3Observed/calculated valueThe value of a test statistic calculated for a particular data set. If the observed value of U is equal to or less than the critical value given in the tail, significance is shown. However, when you have a directional hypothesis you have to check whether the significance is in the direction you predicted.
- 4When should the Chi-square test be used?If you have nominal data.
- 5When should you use the Spearman's Rho test?If you have ordinal or interval data and the study is about the relationship between 2 things.
- 6When should you use the Wilcoxon test? When the experiment looked at the difference between 2 things, uses ordinal/interval data and used a repeated measures design.
- 7When should you use the Mann-Whitney test? When the experiment looks at the difference between 2 things, uses ordinal/interval data and is an independent groups design.
- 8What is a type 1 error? If you use a significance level that is too high (lenient) you might reject a null hypothesis that is true (false positive) e.g: 0.1.
- 9What is a type 2 error? If you use a significance level that is too low (stringent) you might reject an alternate hypothesis that is true (false negative) e.g: 0.01.
- 10What is a significance level? We can never be 100% sure that the pattern of results has arisen by chance but we can be fairly sure. We use a probability level of less than or equal to 5% that the results did occur by chance and we write this as p<_ 0.05.
