Loring and Powell (1988)
DSM IV criteria for schizophrenia - 2What did Loring and Powell do in 1988gave a transcript of a patient interview to psychologists, half told the p's were white and other half black --> black p's labelled as more violent & view with suspicion & danger
- 3Loring and Powell developed Rosenhans study..reliability, results support R as psychiatrists were influenced by ethnicity not individuals characteristics. Increases time validity and pop v- carried out on diff set of p's
- 4Describe Spitzer's experiment in 1975challenged R's findings, even though ppatients were misdiagnosed, psychiatrists rely upon verbal accounts &it is unlikely sane people try trick a psychiatrist to get into an institution
- 5Spitzer criticised Rosenhans studyas it suggests psychiatrists diagnose on individual characteristics and not context (relying upon verbal reports) Decreases external reliability due to the inconsistent results.
- 6Criteria for schizophrenia from the DSM IV2 or more symptoms including hallucinations, delusions, disorganised speech/behaviour, negative symptoms. Over a course of 6 months or longer
- 7Change in the DSM IVsuggests if study repeated the ppatients would not be diagnosed therefore criticising R. This again decreases external reliability
