    STV:NI Assembly/Local election(NI/Scotland
    SV: London Mayoral elections
  2. 2What is a majoritarian system and provide two examplesMajoritarian systems - require the winner to receive over 50% to win, otherwise candidates are eliminated and votes redistributed.
Examples of majoritarian electoral systems include SV, and AV
  3. 3What are proportional systems and provide an exampleProportional systems produce outcomes that closely represent the distribution of votes cast, an example of a proportional electoral system is STV
  4. 4How does SV workUnder SV, Voters number two preferences 1st and 2nd
Candidates who gain 50% or more first preferences are automatically elected
If not, all except the top two candidates are eliminated and second preferences for eliminated candidates are redistributed
  5. 5When considering the effectiveness of different electoral systems in the UK, what 4 factors must be considered1. Strong government
    2. Fair representation
    3. Voter choice
    4. Representative constituency-link
  6. 6How well does FPTP produce strong govtsSince 1945, FPTP has consistently delievered single majority govts. Landslide majorities like those won by Thatcher and Blair have promoted strong party govts. However, of the 20 General Elections after WW2, half resulted in majorities of 30 or less. Less likely to produce strong govts use SPEV
  7. 7How and why is SV good at producing strong govtsSV, a majoritarian system, delivers a winning candidate with broad support of electorate (1st/2nd choice of majority).2016 London Mayoral elections, no candidate secured above 50% in 1st round. Khan won in the 2nd round, securing 59.4% of the 1st and 2nd choice votes. Thus clear mandate
  8. 8The two electoral systems that are worse at producing strong governments are AMS and STV. Why is AMS considered to not produce strong govtsMinority/coalition govts are the norm in Scottish Parliament/ Welsh Assembly. With the exception of 2011 Scottish Parliament elections, none of the past 5 elections to the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly have delivered an outright winner.
  9. 9The two electoral systems that are worse at producing strong governments are AMS and STV. Why is STV considered not to produce strong govtsSTV produced coalition govts in 4 of the last 6 elections to NI Assembly. None of the elections have produced single party majority or minority govts. STV creates a multi-party system. NI Assembly collapsed in 2017, due to disagreements between DUP and Sinn Fein meanin no sitting govt for now 3 years
  10. 10In terms of fair representation, what electoral system is most representative
