Fichas del conjunto (11)
- 1What are the three ways we remember things?Recall - retrieving previously learnt info
Recognition - Identifying previously learnt info
Relearning- Amount of time saved when learning the material again - 2What is an implicit memory?A memory that is acquired and used consciously, it can affect social behaviour and example of this is procedural memories (for things like auto-pilot tasks)
- 3What is an explicit memory?A memory that requires conscious thought , used for things such as place names
- 4What is an episodic memory?A memory of an episode in our lives
- 53 types of episodic memory1 - Autobiographical (life events)
2 - Experimental (taking part in a memory experiment + forgetting words in free recall because of pressure)
3 - Flashbulb - (vivid memories of what was happening during events) - 6What is a semantic memory?A memory of a concept, of rules or of language - it is declaritive
- 7What is procedural memory? An implicit memory of how to do something (walking, getting dressed etc)
- 8What did Tulving suggest about memory? That time referencing was important to episodic but not semantic memory
- 9What is spatial referencing?Remembering something due to context, it is a feature of episodic but not semantic memories
- 10What are the 2 strengths of these ideas about memory?Ostergaard (1987) - boy with brain damage from lack of oxygen suffered episodic and semantic impairment by retained intelligence and learned new things
KC - specific LTM impairment following a motorbike accident left him able to recall facts but not life events, damage to 1 store - 11What are the 3 weaknesses of these ideas about memory?1- Model had to be revised to explain how brain damaged patients were able to perform tasks and learn new skills
2- No room for a relationship between the 2 stores
3 - Studies don't account for informed (semantic) guesses on episodic memory tests
