   • suffering grows out of his own poor judgement
   • Architect of his own downfall
     • Vanity led him to the love test
     • was a terrible father
       • Emotionally neglects goneril and regan as children due to self obsession
         • G+R backlash when given the opportunity. Strips him of power+ titles. He is just an "old man"
   • Suffering takes him to brink of insanity
   • pride invites hollow disingenuous flattery of Goneril and Regan
   • Poor judgement of cordelia
   • Mistreatment of kent
   • Lack of control. Ingredient to his tragic downfall
