1. Protons

   • Have positive charge
   • Located in the neucleus

2. Neutrons

   • Have no charge
   • Located in the neucleus
   • isotopes
     • a loss or gain of an neutron

3. Electrons

   • Have a negative charge
   • Surround the neucleus in shells
     • These shells make up to the elctron configuration
       • 2,8,8,2
   • When an atom loses or gains electrons it forms a ion
     • Losing electrons = positive charge
     • Gaing electrons = negative charge
     • An ion has a full outer shell (2,8,8,2)
     • Ionic bonding
       • involves a transfer of electrons from metal atoms to non-metals
       • The ionic bond is a strong elecrtostatic force of attraction between the positive metal ion and the negative non-metal ion.
