1. Humoral (antibody-mediated) immunity alone is ineffective at controlling the virus

   • Wet, effusive form
     • Vascular damage occurs through replication of virus in macrophages causing inflammation around small vessels
       • Pleural effusion
       • Ascites
       • Complement activation & inflammatory mediator production
         • Low grade DIC

2. Some degree of cell-mediated immunity, humoral response, and partial control of virus

   • Dry, non-effusive form
     • Slower vascular damage & replication but not enough to stop disease progression
       • Pyogranulomas
         • Vessels
         • Eyes
         • Brain
         • Liver
         • Kidneys
         • Lungs
         • Skin
   • Very strong and rapid cell-mediated response can eliminate virus in early stages

3. Early signs: fluctuating fever, inappetance, lethargy, weight loss
