Reducing crime through prevention
- This occurs when the causes for offending are removed. Methods include
- Increasing community policing and police visits to schools. This creates a relationship with the police and helps people learn to avoid crime.
- Providing high quality education. This means people have better opportunities, so crime is less attractive.
- Providing counselling for addiction problems. This means people keep away from crime, which is usually the main funder of any addiction.
- Provide young people with opportunities such as youth clubs. This means they don't turn to crime out of boredom.
-
Reducing crime through protection
- This involves deterring crime by protecting society.
- Security measures such as better CCTV and alarms. This protects people as it puts off potential criminals if there is more of a chance of being caught.
- Neighbourhood watch group chats and schemes. These means crimes are less likely as people notice and tell each other about activity.
- Improving the community through better lighting and an orderly neighbourhood. This means crime is less likely, as an improved community makes questionable behaviour more noticeable.
-
