Quadrats

  1. Quadrats

    • A quadrat is a small wire square (generally about 1m x 1m) used to estimate the distribution of organisms in an environment. These organisms are generally plants, but the distribution of slow-moving animals like snails can also be measured in this way.
  2. Counting

    • The results obtained from quadrats will always be estimates as it is not possible to count every organism in an environment. Using a larger number of quadrats (a bigger sample size) will increase the reliability of your estimation.
    • Example:
    • There are 5 buttercups inside a 1m x 1m quadrat. The entire field measures 60m x 60m in area.
    • The estimated population of buttercups = 5 x 60 = 300.
    • When using quadrats it is important to remember to:
    • A) Place the quadrats randomly to ensure a representative example
    • B) Use multiple quadrats, as this improves the reliability, reproducibility and validity of your estimation.
