  1. 1Episodic MemoryStore for personal events.
Influenced by the emotions present at the time of coding.
Must be recalled by conscious effort.
Involves specific details of the event, context and emotions.
    Explicit memories.
  2. 2Semantic MemoryContains knowledge of the world and meaning of things.
Contains an immense supply of material.
New knowledge is learned from the experiences stored in episodic memory.
    Explicit memories.
  3. 3Procedural MemoryMemory of skills and actions.
Able to recall these without conscious effort.
Usually learned early on in life.
    Implicit memories.
  4. 4Episodic Memory ~Positive evaluation~-Tulving et al (1994) used PET scans to find that the left side of the brain was more active when recalling semantic memories and the right side was more active when recalling episodic memories. This has real-life application as we are able to improve the episodic memory of people with cognitive impairment.
  5. 5Semantic Memory ~Positive evaluation~-HM and Clive Wearing case studies show that there are different types of long term memory, as each one still had parts of their memory that were unaffected.
  6. 6Semantic Memory ~Negative evaluation~-Case studies lack validity as there is no control over different variables, meaning no cause and effect relationship could be made.
-Low validity because it is hard to establish which part of the brain has been affected.
  7. 7Procedural Memory ~Positive evaluation~-Finke (2012) studied Cellist who had damage to his episodic and semantic memory but not his procedural, showing that there are different long term memory types.
  8. 8Comparisons ~Episodic and semantic~Semantic memories are taught but episodic are not.
Episodic is time-stamped but semantic is not.
    Both are explicit memories.
Semantic memories require conscious effort to be recalled but episodic do not.
  9. 9Comparisons ~Procedural and semantic~Procedural memory is implicit but semantic memory is explicit.
Semantic memory involves meaning but procedural involves skills.
