Flashcards
Mycorrhizae
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1What is mycorrhizae?Mutualistic relationship between a fungus and a plant
- 2What does mycorrhizae mean?Root fungus
- 3What is an example of a mycorrhizal relationship?Silver birch tree and fly agaric fungi
- 4What is the hyphae? The (often microscopic) network of threads
This is the main part of the fungus - 5What is the fungal mycelium? The main part of the fungi
- 6How do the tree and fungi combine? The hyphae in mycorrhizae grow around the tree roots and sometimes penetrate the roots
- 7What does the hyphae get?Minerals and water that are passed into the root's xylem
- 8What does this do for the tree?Greatly increases the surface area of the root system
- 9What does the fungus get in return?A source of sucrose
- 10What is another benefit for the tree?A source of nitrates for growth
- 11Where do these nitrates come from?Fungi are saprobionts hence carry out ammonification, increasing the ammonia and hence nitrate content of the soil around the tree
