Flashcards
2.1 Atomic Structure and Isotopes
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1What are the masses of protons, neutrons and electrons?- Proton has mass of 1
- Neutron has a mass of 1
- Electron has a negligible mass about 1/1836th the mass of a proton - 2What are the charges of protons, neutrons and electrons?- Proton positive charge
- Electron negative charge
- The charge on a proton is equal but opposite to the charge on an electron. The charges balance.
- Neutron has no charge. - 3Where is the atoms mass?Nucleus
- 4What are isotopes?Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses.
- 5What do chemical reactions involve?Electrons surrounding the nucleus.
- Different isotopes of the same element have the same number of electrons
- The number of neutrons has no effect on the reactions of an element
- Different isotopes of an element therefore react in the same way - 6What is an ion?Charged atom
- 7What are cations?Positive ions - fewer electrons than protons.
Overall have an postive charge - 8What are anions?Atoms with more electrons than protons.
Anions have a negative charge.
