Cards in this deck (28)

  1. 1“My parts, my titles and my perfect soul/ Shall manifest me rightly”- Othello Act 1 Scene 2Shows how Othello is proud of his career and not afraid of Brabantio's punishment.
  2. 2"Base Indian"/"circumcised dog"- Othello Act 5 Scene 2Shows the shame and unworthiness that Othello is feeling, this juxtaposes his confidence at the beginning of the play.
  3. 3"Honourable murderer"- Othello Act 5 Scene 2Othello believes that his murder of Desdemona can be justified as the honourable thing to do- sense of dramatic irony.
  4. 4"She had eyes and chose me"- Othello Act 3 Scene 3Othello tries to invalidate the doubt that Iago has placed in his mind by telling himself that Desdemona chose him. However it also shows that race is not an issue to Desdemona.
  5. 5"That cunning whore of Venice"- Desdemona Act 4 Scene 2Desdemona is described as a "cunning whore" after Othello believes that she has been unfaithful to him. Contradictory to how he described her in the first acts.
  6. 6"Wretched fortune"- Desdemona Act 4 Scene 2Desdemona blames herself for the way that Othello has treated her and legitimises it by telling herself that it is her fortune.
  7. 7"Men are not gods" Act 3 Scene 4Shows Desdemona letting down her expectations of her husband however she continues to worship him as "My Lord".
  8. 8"Valiant Othello"- Othello Act 1 Scene 2This epithet shows that Othello is highly regarded with bravery and courage, this epithet proves untrue at the end of the play as he allows himself to be overruled by Iago.
  9. 9"Twixt my sheets...done my office"- Iago Act 1 Scene 3Iago tells Roderigo that he believes Othello has done his duty by sleeping with Emilia and this is why Iago wants to seek revenge.
  10. 10“Partly to diet my own revenge” Iago Act 2 Scene 1Iago confesses that he will use Desdemona as bait like food to make up his revenge on Othello and for this, he "loves" her.
  11. 11“Out of her own goodness [he will make the net/ That will enmesh them all” Iago Act 2 Scene 3Iago uses imagery of prey and predator to explain how he will exploit Desdemona's goodness in order to make a trap for both of them to fall into.
  12. 12"I hate the moor"- Iago Act 1 Scene 2Iago's open confession at the beginning of the play shows the audience that all of his following actions will be out of spite/revenge. There is also dramatic irony as he continues to be loyal and friendly towards Othello despite this early confession in his soliloquy.
  13. 13“Handsome, young and hath all those requisites in him that folly and green minds look after”- Cassio Act 2 Scene 1Iago talks about Cassio in a way that shows how he will exploit him as he is handsome and young and Othello being the "green mind" will be jealous of these qualities.
  14. 14"You men of Cyprus, let her have your knees”- Cassio Act 2 Scene 1Cassio addresses the men of Cyprus here demanding that they bow down to Desdemona, an act that Iago sees and then uses Cassio's dedication to her as material to exploit.
  15. 15"He was great of heart"- Cassio Act 5 Scene 3Cassio remains true to Othello, seeing him as a good person and understands that he had a good heart and therefore wouldn't have killed his wife without manipulation.
  16. 16“The Moor’s abused by some most villanous knave”- Emilia Act 4 Scene 2Emilia recognises that a villain would have abused Othello to act in this way and he isn't capable of his own actions.
  17. 17"My husband?"- Emilia Act 5 Scene 2She is still in shock and fails to believe that her husband could have caused Othello's fatal downfall. But she did also give Iago the handkerchief rather than returning it to Desdemona so this may be a false display of her innocence.
  18. 18"Gross revolt"- Brabantio Act 1 Scene 1Brabantio sees Desdemona's act of marrying Othello as unnatural and she never asked for his permission.
  19. 19"Mortal to him"- Brabantio Act 5 Scene 2His heartbreak over his daughters marriage is linked to his death.
  20. 20"Foul thief"- Brabantio Act 1 Scene 2This is how Brabantio describes Othello for stealing his daughter.
  21. 21"Inhuman dog"- Roderigo Act 5 Scene 2Roderigo uses this term to describe Iago and is the first to identify Iago as the real villain in the play.
  22. 22"I have no great devotion to the deed; / And yet he [Iago] hath given me satisfying reasons: / 'Tis but a man gone. Forth, my sword: he dies"- Roderigo Scene 5 Act 1Roderigo does not want to kill Cassio but he wants to have Desdemona. He is being puppeteered by Iago with the hope he may benefit from the transaction. Hence why he has no devotion to the deed but has been persuaded by Iago's reasons.
  23. 23"An old black ram Is tupping your white ewe" Iago Act 1 Scene 1This is Iago telling Brabantio that his daughter is being taken by Othello, the use of the word "white" creates a purity around Desdemona whereas black ram is racial slang.
  24. 24"But I do think it is their husbands’ faults/If wives do fall"- Emilia Act 4 Scene 3This shows how women were powerless over their fate and how in the marriage, women are controlled by the success of their husband.
  25. 25"O curse of marriage"- Othello Act 3 Scene 3This is a display of how Iago has changed Othello's mindset, in scene 1 he was in love with his marriage but now he views it as a curse.
  26. 26"I had rather be a toad And live upon the vapor of a dungeon Than keep a corner in the thing I love For others’ uses"- Othello Act 3 Scene 3This shows how Othello believes that Desdemona is being kept in a corner for someone else's use (Cassio). Othello would rather be a toad trapped in a dungeon than feel jealousy towards his wife and another man. The use of the word "a thing" also suggests that Othello objectifies his wife.
  27. 27"The moor already changes with my poison"- Iago Act 3 Scene 3This shows how Iago is aware of how he is poisoning Othello through his corruption forcing jealousy upon him and making him change the way he behaves towards the other characters.
