Flashcards

The nervous system and Neurotransmissions.

Noah Cliff Biology GCSE English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1List the components of the nervous systemThe central nervous system (Brain and spinal cord) combined with nerves make up the Nervous system.
  2. 2How does the nervous system detect stimuli?Your sensory organs (eyes, ears, skin ...) sense a change, (e.g. in temp.) and send an electrical impulse through the neurons to the CNS. Then the CNS makes a judgement call and send an impulse back that creates a response.
  3. 3WHat is the structure of a sensory neuron? The sensory neuron has dendrites that pick up the electrical signal and send it to the cell body through the dendrons, then the impulse would pass through the cell body to pass through the axons and leave the cell through Axon terminals.
The Dendrons and Axons are long and have a myelin sheath of fat to speed and insulate the impulse.
  4. 4How does the impulse get from the sensory organ to The CNS? How does the impulse for the response return? The sense organ creates an impulse that travels through the neurons which insulate and keep the signal strong until it reaches the CNS. Then either a reflex or a choice your brain decides what to do and a response signal is sent to whatever part of the body necessary.
  5. 5How have the sensory Neurons adapted?Sensory neurons have long denrdons and axons which are insulated with a myelin sheath that keeps the impulse strong and fast.
  6. 6How does the brain react to a stimulus? The brain coordinates a response to the stimulus and sends a response impulse through effectors. (Effectors include muscles and glands).
  7. 7Define Motor and Relay NeuronsMotor Neurons-
They carry the impulses from the CNS to the effectors. They do not have dendrons the dendrites are attached to the cell body.
    Relay Neurons-
They are short Neurons in the Spinal cord where they link motor and sensory neurons. They do not have dendrons the dendrites are attached to the cell body.
  8. 8What are synapses?A synapses is where one neuron meets another neuron. When an impulse reaches an axon terminal a neurotransmitter substance is released. This relays the impulse to the next impulse. This results in the impulse only travelling in one direction.
  9. 9What is a reflex arc?Reflex arcs are neurone pathways that bypass the brain in the case of an emergency for a reflex. It includes the sensory organ, a sensory neuron, the spinal cord and the motor neuron.
